(James Toney sponging up the limelight. 'Shop HT: the UG)
Randy Couture is the hands down winner of the Understatement of the Year Award for his analysis of James Toney's MMA abilities. The Natural was quoted as saying: “There are some serious holes in his game and it’s my job to point those out."
Gee, Randy, ya think?
That's like saying the Grand Canyon is a "serious hole" in Arizona. Besides, don't you have to have a game before you have holes in it?
Toney came to the weigh ins at 237 blubbery pounds, making Roy Nelson look positively svelte. It's clear that Toney has been using his mouth for much more than just trash talk. Tonight he'll be looking to use his hands to knock Couture out, but that's going to be a very tall order. Not impossible, but highly doubtful, enough to make Toney a huge underdog in the betting odds.
This fight is being touted as the first time a "real" boxing champion has set foot into the cage. But that's news to Ray Mercer, who fought Kimbo Slice, and knocked out former UFC HW champion Tim Sylvia.
Mercer crossed over into boxing when MMA matchmaker Gary Marino, now with Team Bombsquad, brought him in to fight Kimbo Slice. The fight happened in N.J. and was the first time a boxing champ fought MMA.
Still, tonight's fight will be fun to watch, if for nothing else other than the spectacle of it. If Toney should get lucky and connect, it will be "Lights Out" for Couture. Much more likely is that Randy will shoot a double, put Toney on his back and then, as Toney tries to right himself much like a turtle would, quickly gets pounded out.
Either way, James has from 750,000 to a million reasons why he took this fight. And that's the bottom line. And speaking of bottom lines, check out this weigh in pic.
