Dana White and the UFC are waging war against the elusive swarm of tasteless and uncouth villians across the globe whom are remorselessly misappropriating their product through widespread internet piracy.
Citing ransacked profits of a startling measure, White bullishly counters Joe Rogan's catchprase of "you can't stop the internet, baby!" with the foreboding declaration, "When people start going to jail, people will stop doing it."
MMAJunkie reports that Lorenzo Fertitta testified in front of the House Judiciary Committee on the perils of internet piracy, and approximated 271 illegal streams with 140,000 viewers. At $50 a whack for current UFC pay-per-views, the speculated number of internet marauders represent a staggering multi-million dollar loss for the leviathan MMA corporation. Lorenzo voiced the following to the committee:
"The piracy of live sporting events is illegal, it kills jobs, and it threatens the expansion of U.S. based companies. The UFC is potentially losing millions of dollars a year from piracy."
The UFC's legal team indicated that it would be possible to file a subpoena for user information and IP addresses upon the websites which distribute pirated material. This concept does illustrate a potential avenue for the UFC to identify and prosecute those broadcasting and viewing the live streams.
For a company that has shown a knack for the ability to rake in profit, and considering the number of zero's attached to the figures they are losing, I would guess this issue will soon be taken to an entirely new level.
