3.) Are teenage girls the next stage of MMA fans?
Next Saturday evening is a major milestone for MMA promotions outside of the UFC. Bellator Fighting Championships, ran by CEO/founder Bjorn Rebney, will be putting on Bellator 35 live on MTV2 with a stacked card for their welterweight tournament featuring Lyman Good, Dan Hornbuckle, and UFC vet Jay Hieron. This is a chance for MMA to reach a whole new audience, which in turn, will earn better ratings and more pay for these smaller promotion’s fighters. If you hate the tatted up guys at the bar in their Affliction shirts, just wait until you start seeing the 12 year old girls with their fake butterfly tattoos and TapouT hats.
2.) What should we expect from Diego “Yes, Nightmare, YES, The Dream, YES!!!, Dirty” Sanchez?
Diego seems to be having a Rihanna moment and forgetting his name. Usually name changes are nothing but drama, however one name change has been great for Diego, and that is the name of his coach. Sanchez has recently joined renowned MMA camp Jackson’s Submission Fighting in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Next Thursday evening at UFC on Versus 3 will be a great test for the New Mexican native as he takes on the always dangerous veteran in Martin Kampmann. With Diego’s recent reemergence to 170 lbs, it will be interesting to see how he does against a true contender in Kampmann.
1.) Will BJ Penn need to bring a rubber (guard)?
I am by no means a Jon Fitch hater; In fact, the few times that I have talked with Mr. Fitch, he has been a very genuine individual and I have nothing but nice things to say about the guy. With that being said, it is no secret that Jon Fitch plans to come into this fight, and every fight for that matter, looking to hold down his opponent and use his superior wrestling to control them on the ground in route to a decision. Now let me ask you, if you plan on having a night full of rolling on the ground with someone between your legs, you need a rubber…correct? That is why I believe if BJ Penn is going to win this fight, he will have to bring a rubber…guard. BJ Penn has tremendous takedown defense, but I believe Fitch will put him on his back. If Penn can use his rubber guard to sweep Fitch or slap on a triangle choke, we could see BJ earning a title shot, but if not it could be a long night for “The Prodigy.”
