In what became a casualty of some on-the-fly production juggling of unpredictable fight results in a specific time slot for the live programming of Saturday's "Fedor Vs. Rogers" event, Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz spoke with
Rear Naked News about how the promotion has rectified the decision to nix the undercard fight between Mark Miller and Deray Davis.
The nullification of the fight sparked complaints and criticism from the MMA community in regards to the lost opportunity for the fighters, who spend months in training to prepare for battle, and of course incur expenses throughout the process which are normally compensated for by payment of salary and win bonuses (if applicable) after the fight takes place. When the match-up was dissolved altogether, questions remained unanswered--until now.
Strikeforce's Mike Afromowitz:
"We paid each fighter his fight purse and are now going to pay each his win bonus. Originally, we attempted to place this matchup on another fight card being promoted by a local promoter in Chicago in a couple of weeks. If both fighters had accepted, we would have paid each his fight purse a second time. Since neither was available due to different circumstances, however, we paid each his win bonus on top of the purse. Please note that this is the first time in Strikeforce history (not only MMA, but also kickboxing) that a situation has ever occurred."
Kudo's to Strikeforce for adequately finessing a difficult situation. Although this is far from their virgin broadcast, the promotion will be faced with identifying and avoiding the unforeseen landmines and nuances associated with the live production of premiere MMA events.
