With Bobby Lashley versus Jimmy Ambriz and NFL great Herschel Walker versus Greg Nagy serving as the proverbial icing on the cake, the Strikeforce: Miami card is complete and compelling. January 30th equals the event lift-off.
The salivation starts with an appetizing pair-up of grouchy strikers Nick Diaz and DREAM welterweight champ Marius "The Whitemare" Zaromskis in the event's headliner. Unless you're clueless about these two fighters or happen to be a staunch dissident regarding marijuana use, this fight sells itself with the fireworks that are sure to unfold. The victor will be declared the new Strikeforce welterweight champion.
Another title is at stake in the women's 145 pound class for the Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos versus Marloes Coenen encounter. Cyborg, of course, clobbered the woman who was seemingly destined to become "the face of women's MMA", Gina Carano, in the biggest women's MMA fight in the history of the sport. Marloes Coenen exacted sweet revenge over Roxanne Modafferi on the "Fedor vs. Rogers" card to earn a shot at Cyborg's belt. Both women are aggressive and well-rounded, and at the top of the food chain in female fighting.
Much like Zaromskis/Diaz, the Robbie Lawler versus Melvin Manhoef scrap almost certainly spells sleepy-time for whoever connects solidly first. Considering Manhoef's allergy to all things submission and grappling related, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that Lawler will invoke a ground scenario to seriously bolster his chances of winning. Manhoef is coming off the biggest and most impressive win of his career after clocking Kazuo Misaki into next week, while Lawler may be bouncing back from the most disappointing loss of his recent career after Jake Shields bolted on an airtight standing guillotine early in the 1st.
Topping off the prominent fights, partially slighted welterweight Jay Hieron takes on veteran Joe Riggs in a welterweight bout. Hieron followed the dangling carrot of a guaranteed title shot from Affliction to Strikeforce, but Nick Diaz was unable to fulfill the steps to attain a license from the commission, and Hieron took out Jesse Taylor instead. Joe "Diesel" Riggs will carry a four-fight roll into the fight, and continues to stay busy in the cage after having somewhat of an erratic MMA career at the top level.
Rounding out the card are Pablo Alfonso vs. Marcos da Matta, Michael Byrnes Jr. vs. David Zitnik, Sanah Homasi vs. John Kelly, and Craig Oxley vs. David Gomez.
