You may or may not have heard the buzz surrounding Nova Uniao fighter Ronnys Torres, but you will in February of 2010.
After withdrawing from two of his previously planned entrances into the UFC due to injuries, first against Melvin Guillard at UFN 18 and then Jeremy Stephens at UFN 19, Tatame reports that Torres is back on against Guillard for UFC 109 on February 2nd. Torres is an unrelenting piece of machinery.
He is a quick finisher who uses tremendously strong wrestling to put his opponent on his back and pound away while hunting aggressively for submissions. In his fourteen career wins, he has only seen the judges cards twice; the remainder of his victories are almost perfectly split between submissions and TKO's, and none have made it as far as the third round. Torres frequented the Shooto events in Brazil and has also competed in Jungle Fight.
His most impressive win is a first round annihilation of former Pride lightweight star Luiz Azeredo, one of the most underrated fighters in MMA, and one of the most difficult fighters to finish (unless your name is Hellboy or Gomi). Torres handed Azeredo his first loss by way of submission by snatching a kimura in the first round after ragdolling him from the opening bell. Guillard always presents a threat with his heavy hands, solid wrestling, and natural athleticism. He will face a tough test with newcomer Torres, whose specialty is Guillard's weakness.
