Did anyone else have to double check to make sure that today wasn't April 1st?
What we thought was just another rambunctious boxer that would make a lot of noise and then ride off into the sunset has become a very bizarre yet intriguing reality. Former professional boxer James Toney, master of side-check kick defense and the son of a "death fighter", has officially scrawled his name across the dotted line of a UFC contract. Five Ounces of Pain broke the mindblowing story.
This has been an ordeal that no one's really been taking seriously, and now that it looks like the deal is done, the concept of a boxer of Toney's caliber inside the octagon is interesting. Toney was one hell of a boxer; he TKO'd Evander Holyfield, which is a pretty solid authenticator. Toney and Ricardo Mayorga represent an entirely different level of boxing crossovers that we've ever seen strap on the small gloves and go NHB in the cage, even if their finest years are behind them.
There are many more questions from answers at this point, but my biggest curiosity lies within the weight class that Toney has his sights on. Toney's weight steadily went up over the course of his boxing career, but he finished as a heavyweight, which is where we will most likely see him. Based on his frame in the videos flying around lately, he looks a bit heavy, and at only 5"10, being too short is just another one of many disadvantes he'll be facing.
