Summer may be winding down, but the non-stop action of MMA is just heating up. UFC 118 comes to us live on Saturday night, August 28th from the TD Garden Arena in Boston. This will be the UFC’s very first trip to Massachusetts. Here, we will finally see the highly anticipated rematch for the Lightweight Championship of the world. Champion, Frankie “The Answer” Edgar (12-1) will attempt to make lightning strike twice by pulling out another victory against the seemingly unbeatable “Prodigy” BJ Penn (15-6-1). The last time around, Edgar used precision boxing and fluid movement to keep Penn at bay. Penn could not get Edgar’s timing down, but insisted on standing and striking with Frankie. Penn appeared to be out of character by not attempting to get the fight to the ground at all. The end result was Edgar pulling off arguably the upset of the year. This time around, expect Edgar to do much of the same--force Penn to counter-punch while keeping the fight standing as long as possible. Frankie seemed to frustrate Penn in their first fight by mixing up his striking and footwork. No doubt, Edgar will keep that same game plan Saturday night. Read more... Add new comment

Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva is not a happy camper. Both Fedor and Overeem were very possible opponents for the Brazilian fighter, but now it appears that he won't get to fight either one for awhile. A frustrated Big Foot put it this way: "I come from Paraiba , in Brazil…..we don’t back down from things there! I fight who ever they put in front of me, you will never see me picking and chosing opponents. Its sad, when the HW champion of the 2nd biggest event in the world , starts whining that he will only fight this guy or that, what kind of a professional is this guy? He is the Champ isn’t he? Why be afraid to fight me? And how about Fedor, one of the biggest legends in the sport, is this how he got to be a legend? Declining fights? I never disrespect any opponent, no matter what his record is or what the publics thoughts are about him, to me, he merits respect just for stepping up there and facing me, but these guys are disappointing me, they are demonstrating that they are not deserving of my respect. We are fighters, we are supposed to be some of the best in the world, our job is to go up there and perform, put on a good fight for the fans. I am ready to do this, just tell me who is next and I will be there. I am not a women to be involved in soap operas , looking forward to the next episode. I think that strike force needs to put and end to this. Give me whoever, and I will fight him, and winning or losing, people will know that I came to fight that day, and I put my heart into it, to me, this is the only way."
Hardcore fans will be the first to tell you that "MMA Math doesn't work" and "anything can happen". Unfortunately, many go on to cite Royce Gracie's victory a mere seventeen years ago over uni-gloved icon Art Jimmerson in UFC 1 as to why James Toney has "no chance" against Randy Couture. How many times have you read "go watch UFC 1" in the past few weeks as a justification of veritable insanity for anyone giving James Toney a shot against Couture? The early UFC's were nothing more than an experimental petri dish for real hand-to-hand combat where "defending a triangle" might result in protractors being drawn from Trapper Keepers, being "well rounded" only applied to the shape of "Sumu" fighter Manny Yarbrough, and Scott Morris was more likely to disappear victoriously in a smoke bomb than painfully shatter our comforting childhood fascination with the mysteriously invincible aura of ninjas. Wielding conveniently created maxims seems to be a common occurrence in MMA sewing circles; not unlike the way Werdum wasn't given a prayer to beat Fedor on account of the way "The Last Emperor" soundly defeated renowned submissionist "Minotauro" Nogueira, or Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante was a futile prediction over King Mo because he had recently fell to an irrelevant Mike Kyle. Life would be so much easier if we could stuff everything into a labeled box and expect the same outcome to repeat infinitely.
Terrible, terrible news, ladies. Jason “Man Candy” Chambers, hunky co-host of the show “Human Weapon” is engaged. He's 18-5-2 as a professional Mixed Martial Arts fighter, his last win coming by first round rear naked choke, James Hergott, President of Owned Entertainment, Inc., is your party-crashing messenger. Now that’s “tear up your diary” sort of news for most of you. But before you light a room full of teacup candles and take that last, slow bubble bath ride to the lightweight at the end of the tunnel, check out his lady:
UFC 118 brings us a tasty mélange of fights with something for everyone: A title rematch between arguably the two best fighters in the most stacked division in the sport; a throwback style-vs-style matchup of former greats in their respective sports; a number one contender fight between an undefeated prospect and an ever-improving standout; another top contender looking to get back on track; and, ever the cherry on top, a Diaz. The entertainment potential is high, but how do the fights actually break down? Put on your reading glasses: This is going to be a long one. ![]() As first reported by Dana White in an interview with MMAFighting.com, UFC Octagon Girl Arianny Celeste will be appearing in the November issue of Playboy Magazine. A lot of people have been anticipating the day she graced the cover for quite some time now and it looks like the time is finally here.
Dana White has released his second Video Log for UFC 118. The Baldfather gets all lacquered up and takes us backstage for an appearance on ESPN. A bump of the "Read More" button will take you to the goods.
UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon has questionably chosen to usurp such classic nickname suggestions from the Underground Forum as "Creepy" and "The Fruit Bat" for "J-Lau". Despite this glaring shortcoming, Lauzon continues to impress with sugary subtleties like his video production skills. Lauzon will meet Gabe "Godzilla" Reudiger at UFC 118, and has brought true honor to the match with this short tribute film to his opponent, titled "Godzirra". The score is startlingly harmonious, he does a great job of building the characters, and the action is intense and replete with a shocking cliffhanger ending. Were he not a professional athlete, I would speculate that psychadelics could've been involved. Check the flick after the jump.
Viachenslav Datsik, arguably the most insane MMA fighter on the planet, has escaped from a psychiatric hospital, according to The Moscow Times. Datsik is a figure of legend. Why? Because alongside all of his utter absurdities in and out of the cage, he knocked out Andrei Arlovski in 1999, during his professional debut. But two years later, Datsik began a six-fight losing streak, the end of his bizarre MMA career. Check out the following videos for a taste of his interesting approach to the sport: |
