There are two reasons why you should know and love Brazilian MMA fighter Joaquim "Mamute" Ferreira:  the first is that he is the only fighter to not only defeat UFC heavyweight mangler Junior Dos Santos, but finish him with a slick armbar; the second is that he is an old school Sepultura fan and the Cavalera brothers are what got him into fighting.

You say you have no idea who or what a "Sepultura" is?  You probably either get the senior discount on your McDonald's coffee, listen to Michael Bolton, or you're an avid badminton fan (not that there's anything wrong with any of those exemplary qualities).

Before we get into the interview, let's discuss Mamute's losses.  A quick glance at his 8-3 record does not relate the full story nor reflect the talent that this young man exudes.  He suffered his first two losses on the same night in the XFC tournament in Rio De Janeiro.  He first engaged Andre Mussi to a grueling decision that most believed Mamute should have won, and as a testament to this, Mussi was unable to continue in the tournament finals because he was too worn-down and injured from Mamute's submissions.  Exhausted himself, Mamute stepped up and took Mussi's position in the tournament finals later that evening against a man named Junior Dos Santos.

Tonight is the premier of the Tri-State Battle.  They're having their first amateur MMA event in Dover, New Jersey and yours truly will be at the show doing the ring announcing and commentary for the Internet broadcast.  I believe the event is going to be broadcast live on where you can catch all the action FREE!

Aslo, be sure to check out the promotion's website:

See you at the show!

This is not it:

Read a great article today by my good friend William (Billy Ho) Hofacker.  Billy runs an MMA fitness website and is also a brown belt under Matt Serra.  Billy manages and teaches at Serra's acadamy on Long Island and he does a great job of it.

Check out Billy's site.  It's got a ton of great fitness and training info:

Here's the article:

One day, a curious teenage daughter asked her mother, “Mommy why do you always cut off a third of the loaf of bread before baking it?” “Because that’s what you’re supposed to do,” responded the mom. “I just don’t understand why you can’t bake the whole thing,” said the young girl. “Well my mother is the one who taught me this. I’ll just call and ask her to settle this once and for all,” said mom. Ring. Ring. “Hello,” says a voice on the other end. “Hi mom. It’s me, your daughter. I just wanted to know why you’re supposed to cut off a third of a loaf (of bread) before baking it.” “Oh no sweetie,” her mother chimes. “You’re not supposed to. I just always did that because our oven was too small and I couldn’t fit the whole loaf. I wish I didn’t have to waste all that bread.”

Oh man, tough break for Mike Massenzio.  He is in great shape and was all ready for his Monday's UFC Fight Night 20 event against Gerald Harris.  Other sites have reported that he has been scratched from the card due to an undisclosed injury, but we have learned from his management that he has a staph infection in his scalp.

Mike had a high fever and went to the hospital where the infection was discovered.  This is a tough break for the New Jersey fighter, who was looking forward to getting back in the Octagon.

Replacing Mike will be John Salter, an undefeated prospect with a 4-0 record, who will be making his UFC debut.

Get well soon, Mike!

Check out this cool little documentary from our friend Dan over at RAGEDMental. Here's part of the discription:

Knockouts are the most sought out subject in the history of combat sports. "Knockout Secrets", is the first film ever to be conclusive, about the ability of knocking out an opponent. This documentary will take you on a quest to discover every secret of the knockout artist, and their abilities to K.O. a human being.

I was able to catch up with Ron Foster, a former MMA fighter and the man in charge of making the magic happen for the rapidly accelerating Shine Fight Promotions.

Shine Fights vaulted into the MMA spotlight with the star-studded lineup of their second event, titled "ATT vs. The World".  The card featured a compelling and diverse blend of both experienced veterans as well as promising up and comers, such as Yves Edwards, Roan Carneiro, Micah Miller, Jorge "Macaco" Patino, Junior Assuncao, and Luis "Buscape" Firmino.

Shine Fights has been swallowing up oodles of talent as of late, signing former pro boxer Ricardo Mayorga (who will make his MMA debut for the promotion in March of 2010), Murilo "Ninja" Rua, and Russian fighter Alexander Shlemenko, to name a few.  The upcoming Shine card will feature Mayorga's debut against a yet to be announced opponent (although Din Thomas is quite vocally lobbying for the fight), Hector Lombard vs. Alexandre "Cacareco" Ferreira, the rematch between Luis Azeredo and Luis "Buscape" Firmino from their stellar fight at Pride Bushido 6, and exciting Luta Livre fighter Luciano Azevedo versus the HIT Squad's BJJ coach, Kyle Watson.

Last Friday's Asylum Fight League 24 show was a rousing success.  I did a write up on it on Saturday, and today you can relive the event with a slide show of photographs taken by one of MMA's finest photographers Mr. Dan Rod.

Dan was front and center at the AFL show and he captured all the great moments.  Check out his website at

Thanks for pics, Dan!
