Other MMA Orgs

I will never forget Randy Smith's words back in 2008, immediately following a knockout loss.  He told me, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."  In the years since, Randy has backed up those words, and his efforts have now earned him a shot at former UFC champion Tim Sylvia.

Smith will be fighting Sylvia on June 16 at New England Fights in Lewiston, Maine.   If Tim thinks he's got an easy fight in front of him, he's got another thing coming.  The Wolf is far better than his record, and he brings a lot of firepower into the cage with him.  I would not be surprised at all if Randy shocks the fight world by beating the former UFC champ.

Randy is coming off a loss to the UFC's Tom DeBlass via heelhook.  But Tim Sylvia is more of a bomber than a submission artist, so this fight is sure to be fireworks for as long as it lasts.  For more info about this card, check out the NEF website.

Good luck, Randy "The Wolf" Smith!

Pay-Per-View event McCorkle vs. Heden: Fighting for a Better World official results

(Press release)

LITTLE FALLS, NJ – March 31, 2012 – Worldwide Mixed Martial Arts Sports, Inc. (WMMA) took a giant leap towards revolutionizing the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) on Saturday, March 31st with their first pay-per-view (PPV) event at the Don Haskins Center located on the beautiful campus of the University of Texas El Paso.

The David vs. Goliath story of Sean “Big Sexy” McCorkle vs. the hard-hitting Brian Heden captured the hearts of many when Heden overcame all odds to walk out of the Don Haskins Center as the victor. With his upper lip split in half, Heden toppled the giant by scoring a TKO victory in the second round. During the second round, Heden found himself with his back on the mat being overpowered by the larger McCorkle, however Heden’s heart proved to be much larger as he quickly flipped his position to land McCorkle’s back on the mat. With McCorkle’s left arm trapped, Heden unleashed a furious barrage of hammer fists until the referee called a stoppage to the bout due to excessive strikes, leaving the fans of El Paso on their feet.

The four-fight undercard, streamed live and free of charge through WMMA’s website, provided the fireworks early on as it featured two knockouts, a TKO, and a guillotine choke – all in the first round.

In their first ever event and PPV broadcast to over 175 countries, WMMA entertained the entire El Paso, TX community. The PPV broadcast showcased six bouts that supplied the electricity to the Don Haskins Center.

During the event, WMMA handed over a check in the amount of $25,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Official results after the jump.

Somebody must have swapped out Jose Canseco's steroids with PCP, because the man is tripping.  He actually wants to get an MMA tournament going that would feature him, Tyson, Shaq and Herschel Walker.  Yes, he really said that, and yes he's serious.  However, he needs to find an investor, and that means that this little project will more than likely never materialize.  Which is probably a good thing for Canseco's head.  He's fought a couple of times, and got his ass handed to him a couple times.  No way he survives a round with any of the other proposed tourney members.

Here's his quote.  I cleaned up the spelling and punctuation to make it legible.  Cocaine is a helluva drug:

"After baseball season I'm thinking of holding a Vegas MMA tourney.  Beef Bash 1with me, Shaq, Tyson, and Herschel.  Any promoters interested?"

Stay by the phone, Jose!  It's sure to ring at any moment.  And now here's a video of Jose getting clobbered by Hong Man Choi.

Mike D'Angelo Jr. comes from a fighting family. One of five boys, he and his brothers all grew up practicing martial arts. They've competed in tournaments up and down the East Coast and have done very well. As a kid Mike was a 4-time NAGA national champion and 1-time NAGA world champion. Now he is looking to make an impact on MMA.

In his first fight for Short Fuse, a Fort Myers promotion, Mike won the Short Fuse 170 pound amateur title with a third round submission of his opponent. He will be defending that title tomorrow night, November 11, against Ricky Sanchez.

As the NAGA titles show, Mike is very well versed on the ground, but he's got a great stand up game too. He's trained with Derek Panza, who is a former ISKA world heavyweight champion. Panza has knocked out 3 UFC fighters including Pat Smith, who he KO'd to win the ISKA world heavyweight championships. Mike also trains with Tim "Bring the Pain" Lane, a top striking coach out of Las Vegas.

In addition to fighting, Mike is also a trainer himself. Along with his Dad, Mike Sr., he recently opened D'Angelo Mixed Martials Arts in Cape Coral, Florida.

Mike is definitely a rising talent and he's somebody to keep your eye on. He plans on eventually going pro but wants to make sure that he's ready. "Definitely looking to go pro," he says. "But I'm taking it one step at a time. Step by step."

And victory by victory.
