The fight originally scheduled for UFC 17 finally comes to fruition more than 10 years and almost 100 events later.
Two of the most reputable UFC heavyweight champions and feared wrestlers in MMA will go head-to-head at 205 pounds for UFC 109 on February 6th in Vegas, as a Randy "The Natural" Couture and Mark "The Hammer" Coleman encounter is
reported to be on the UFC drawing board.
Opinions vary on this alleged pairing, as some nostalgic fans appreciate the old school "superfight" type of matchmaking, while others predict it to be a somewhat meaningless creation that will lack flare. Propagating the latter, I would not expect a dazzling display of versatile striking nor any flying submissions.
The premise when either fighter is engaged in an exciting match-up is whether or not their fight-halting and all-encompassing grappling control will be able to neutralize the opposing competitor, so on the surface, one might expect this bout to be decided by the final answer as to who is the better and stronger wrestler; however, I do feel that Couture will leverage his cerebral strategic abilities to exploit the areas of his MMA game where he has evolved further than Coleman, which in my opinion lie with Couture's improved stand-up, the steady abrasion of his dirty boxing in the clinch, and the increased threat of his basic submission skills.
Yes, I believe it's possible that Randy Couture may submit Mr. Coleman. This is an important and pivotal fight for both men, as Coleman is still looking to regain his aura of dominance since rejoining the UFC, and Couture is now making his way up the light-heavyweight ladder with Brandon Vera one controversial rung below.
The fight is not yet official, so stay tuned as more concrete reports develop.
