Frankie Perez is something special. Even when he was an amatuer mixed martial artist, people who watched him fight knew that he would one day fight for the biggest MMA organization in the world, the UFC. And now, after a 9-1 pro career, with his lone loss being a very close split decision against Chris Wade, Frankie makes his UFC debut tomorrow night on the undercard of the McGregor vs. Siver fight.

I've been lucky enough to see just about every one of Frankie's fights, and I've been saying for a long time that he is a world class fighter. Now he's going to get to showcase his skills to a worldwide audience. Frankie is the real deal, and I really look forward to him fighting the best fighters in the world.

The UFC Lightweight division is on notice: Franke Perez Jr. has arrived!

Tommy Dowd

The New Jersey Martial Arts Hall of Fame is extremely proud of its third class of inductees to the New Jersey Martial Arts Hall of Fame. This class will be honored at the third dinner gala to be held at the beautiful La Quinta Inns & Suites on December 5, 2014.

On December 5th, tommy Dowd will be inducted as Muay Thai Trainer.

Tom Dowd was introduced to Muay Thai in 1996 while training under Kru James Wellington, who fought and trained under Kru Phil Nurse from The Wat in New York City. Tom trained in the martial art for one year until the opportunity to work in law enforcement and the obligations of starting a family required that he devote more time away from Muay Thai training.

Tom started training once again in 2000 and was able to compete in five smoker fights as well as two sanctioned fights. After several years of training on and off, Tom decided in 2008 to open his own school in Wall Township with his partner Tracy Dowd and named the school Impact Martial Arts Academy with the focus that the school would have an impact on their students’ lives.

Since the inception of Impact Martial Arts Academy, Tom and Tracy have had hundreds of students both young and old come through the doors of their school. Some students come just to work out. Other students just need a place to get away or want to meet new people, while others join who want to fight competitively at Muay Thai.

Tom has also been invited on several occasions to teach the art of Muay Thai at the Monmouth County Police Academy. Tom has trained with and was a regular sparring partner for UFC fighter Kurt Pellegrino as well as current UFC fighter Nick Catone whom he has trained and cornered in several of his professional fights. Since opening Impact in March of 2008, the school has had two amateur Muay Thai belt holders and Impact Martial Arts Academy looks forward to a bright future.

We hope you will join us on December 5, 20124 Mark your calendars now and purchase your tickets early so you can be sure to be a part of New Jersey martial arts history. On Saturday, July 12, one of New York's biggest and best promotions, Aggressive Combat Sports presents Aggressive Combat Championship 7. The event takes place at the York College Arena, 94-20 Guy R Brewer Blvd, Jamaica, New York.

Professional MMA is still illegal in New York, but thanks to the efforts of promotions like Aggressive Combat Sports, the sport is thriving. These are amateur MMA contests, but they use full MMA rules and you will not find better talent anywhere.

I'll be in the cage doing my thing on July 12, and hope to see many of my fellow New Yorkers in the arena.

For tickets check out AggressiveCombatSportsMMA.com or call 917-685-5742. See you at the arena!

Who's coming to Serra BJJ in Huntington on Sunday, June 22 to learn from Ray Longo & Renzo Gracie?  It's a great cause, to help Brian Baney who's fighting brain cancer. Plus we will have a dunk tank. When was the last time you got to dunk Matt Serra or Eddie "Truck" Gordon?
There will be many celebrities in attendance, as well as some of the best training on the planet. Be there for this great cause!

The New York Fight Exchanges third outing, which took place on Saturday, June 7, 2014, was called "Unstoppable." The name is apt, not only for this particular event, but for the promotion itself. The NYFE, after just three shows, is already the biggest and best amateur MMA promotion in the state of New York.

NYFE events take place at the famed Amazura Concert Hall in Jamaica, Queens.  And in this third outing, NY fight fans enjoyed the finest mixed martial arts offered in the state of New York. Once again, promoters Tom Sconzo and Mike Washington did an amazing job putting on fights that not only pleased the crowd, but gave New York fighters the opportunity to fight in their home state.

As always, the card was stacked with talent, with fighters representing some of the best camps anywhere, including Long Island MMA, Renzo Gracie Fight Academy, East West MMA and the Jungle Gym. The event, which is sanctioned by the WKA, had three vacant titles up for grabs.

The first title fight, for the vacant WKA NY State 135 pound crown, featured Elijah Punzone from East West MMA taking on Mike "Caveman" Kuhn out of Long Island MMA. The first round was a back and forth battle, but in the second round, Kuhn came out with a vengeance and stopped Punzone with a TKO.

The second title fight, for the vacant WKA NY State 185 pound crown, featured Constantine Gemelas, out of East West MMA, taking on Eric Ott, out of Long Island MMA. The first two rounds saw some great exchanges on the feet as well as exciting scrambles. Both men had their moments in the fight until the third round, when Ott landed some huge shots on the very tough Gemelas, forcing the referee to call a halt to the contest.

In the very highly anticipated main event, undefeated fighter Jerome "The Bull" Mickle put his 10-0 record on the line against yet another Long Island MMA fighter, Hugh McKenna. McKenna came into the bout with a record of 2-2, but records can be very deceiving. And it showed in the fight, as McKenna immediately took the feared striker Mickle down and kept him down for most of the first round. In the second round it was more of the same. At one point Mickle was able to get back to his feet and land some punches, but McKenna's wrestling takedowns were relentless. McKenna kept the fight on the ground and in the second round took Mickle's back, sinking in the rear naked choke for the victory and WKA USA welterweight title.

All in all it was an amazing night of fights, and it solidified the NYFE's standing as New York's premier fight promotion.  The event was videotaped by Ring Fever, and should be available for viewing soon. For more info and photos of this event, be sure to check out the NYFE's website and Facebook page.

The next show is September 20, 2014. Make sure you get your tickets early, because this event, like all NYFE events, will be unstoppable!
