“I’ve watched enough of it (Ultimate Fighting Championship) channel surfing to know that I find it repugnant ... barbaric,” said Coun. Pam Bookham in an interview with The Outlook.
The airtight case stated above is only the first motive provided in the story by BCLocalNews.com for the recent banishment of boxing, MMA, and the athletic commission in North Vancouver. It gets better. Allow me to present Exhibit A and B. The first comes from Councillor Bob Fernley, who moved to eliminate the athletic commission and MMA entirely. Here's an excerpt:
Fearnley admitted that he doesn’t watch “that sort of stuff” but has read articles on the subject. “My wife is a nurse and she talks about head trauma and the long-term effects of this type of sport,” said Fearnley.
The last element suggested as the thrust for the exile was an incident at a past event where a trainer "stormed the ring" and "verbally lashed out at the referee" while "other people also entered the ring and added to the commotion." Egads! Were there no riot police present? And did this cretin go so far as to use the F-word? Any sport that spawns the immoral act of a heated argument is clearly unfit for society. Nevermind that I saw two geezers nearly come to blows over an intense game of shuffleboard the other day, which I've now reported to the local authorities. "This aggression will not stand."
Let's summarize the evidence:
1. Lady channel surfs, finds whatever she interprets to be MMA as repugnant and barbaric.
2. Councillor Bob caves under his wife's nursing credentials when she "talks about head trama and the long-term effects" of MMA.
3. A trainer enters the ring and argues with the ref when he thought his fighter was allowed to take too much punishment; other people also enter the ring.
Result: No MMA, boxing, or athletic commission in North Vancouver. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the well-oiled decision making machine of today's government, which is far more befitting to be categorized as "barbaric" and "repugnant" than combat sports.
