(Ben Syers and Team Renegade)
All I can say is wow! Club Abyss was jammed from wall to wall with MMA fans last night in Sayerville, NJ, where Evolution AMMA held their third event. This one was the biggest and best one yet, and the atmosphere was electric. Two champions were crowned last night, Kenny Rivera and Justin Rios.
Justin Rios was fighting Noel Arcibal for the vacant Evolution 135 pound title and Arcibal almost had him out with a punch before Rios composed himself and subbed Arcibal with an armbar. All of that action took place in the first round. It was crazy and the crowd went wild.
Kenny Rivera then took on Piotr Andrejko and the two men warred for three rounds with Rivera coming out on top in a unanimous decision. Again the crowd was totally into the fight and very vocal in their support of the fighters, which is always a great thing to see.
Also want to mention another fighter, Ben Syers, who took on Jamie Hadzima. I train with Ben at Team Renegade and I knew that he was in great shape going into the fight. The first round saw Hadzima on top controlling position for much of the round, but in the second, Syers was able to secure the guillotine and the fight was stopped. Big congratulations to Ben and Team Renegade!
Evolution AMMA will be back in October, and I already can't wait to see what promoter Jose Suarez and matchmaker Steve Katz will do in order to top this event last night. Great job, guys!
Also had some fun with legendary NJ referee Donnie Carolei. You might remember my Cinderalla story of last month when I forgot my shoes and Donnie came to the rescue with his powder blue shoes. Last night he reffed four fights, so I introduced him as Donnie "Blue Shoes" Carolei. Then in the second one I called him Donnie "Cinderella" Carolei. Then Nick Lembo and the boys at cageside got involved and things got a bit crazy. For Donnie's third fight, it was "Staten Island's Own Joe Dirt Donnie Carolei." And finally, we pulled out all the stops with "And your referee here with instructions, straight from prison, Donnie Sweet Cheeks Carolei!"
I'm just glad Donnie didn't ref any more fights, because that's impossible to top!
And speaking of refs, also worked with the colorful (from all that tattoo ink!) Keith Peterson, who I had to talk out of beating the crap out of me after I accidently clunked him on the head with the microphone. Good times!
Also want to give a shout out to Mean Jitsu Fightwear, who was one of the sponsors. They have some very cool gear and you should check out their website MeanJitsu.com.
If you couldn't make the show, you can check out the fights on GoFightLive.tv.
