(TUF's Jeff Lentz is Dead Serious!)
As a ring announcer, it's always great to look out at the crowd from inside the cage and see wall to wall people. And that's what happened at Dead Serious MMA 2. The Rahway Rec Center was filled to capacity with fans rooting on their favorite fighters, and the noise level was off the charts. It was a great way to end the MMA year in New Jersey, and the show really put Dead Serious MMA on the map.
Dead Serious's first show was held back in October, on the day it happened to snow. So while the crowd was decent, it was not like the standing room only crowd that showed up on Saturday night. Already it is obvious that promoter Frankie Perez and director/matchmaker Steve Katz are raising the bar for amateur MMA in the state, and this card was simply off the hook. Almost every fight was a highlight reel of action, and the audience was wild with enthusiasm.
We had lots of fantastic finishes in the 15 bouts, including in 2 out of 3 of the title fights. Belts changed hands as reigning champions RJ Starace and Jon Pecyna were stopped by Danny Carbonal and Chris Sladky respectively. In the third championship bout, Stephen Regmen retained his belt with a razor thin split decision victory over Michael "Sharp" Sanders.
Dead Serious MMA is here to stay, and they've got 3 shows scheduled for next year. You can catch the action on the replays at GoFightLive. I know I'll be re-watching these fights, because they were that good. Am I serious? No, I'm Dead Serious!
On a personal note, apologies to Dr. Stu Patel for totally messing up the birthday shout out to his sister, who was in attendance. I won't go into details, but it was bad! And special thanks to Nick "Luscious" Lembo for helping me with my tie. In addition to all of Nick's remarkable contributions to mixed martial arts, the man can tie a mean Windsor knot!
There were also some MMA VIPs in the crowd, including UFC fighters Mike Massenzio, Nick Catone, and TUF's Jeff Lentz. Bellator's Lymond Good was also on hand, as well as martial arts legend Shihan Bill Louie, the founder of Goju-Ryu.
