Ladies and gentlemen, please take this at face value for the unsubstantiated rumor that this is. A website called MMA Recap is claiming to have been informed by DREAM that the former #2 ranked heavyweight in the world, Josh Barnett, will ink a deal with DREAM that will place him inside the ring with none other than Fedor Emelianenko.
Through the recent co-promotional agreement between Strikeforce, M-1 Global, and DREAM, this would (and is allegedly intending to) provide a platform for Fedor to participate in DREAM as a Strikeforce/M-1 representative to consummate the shattered Emelianenko vs. Barnett fight that was supposed to take place at "Affliction: Trilogy", which died a premature and highly publicized death after Barnett's steroid test came back positive, rendering the heavyweight main event as doomed back to "dream fight" status.
The lax (and in some cases nonexistent) enforcement of strict drug testing for performance enhancing substances in the land of the rising sun definitely lends itself to a likely playground for Barnett to migrate towards, especially considering Barnett's popularity in Japan, as the fighter spent the majority of his career competing there.
Additionally, this would add a tremendous anchor to Strikeforce's ultra-talented but lean heavyweight roster, where match-ups between Rogers, Werdum, and Overeem were previously the only options after the mega-acquisition of The Last Emperor. Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, another fighter based in the states that had an athletic commission run-in with steroids, made an appearance at the blockbuster "Fedor Vs. Rogers" Strikeforce show, but his loss to Fabricio Werdum somewhat cancelled out the positive notion that another respectable top-level heavyweight had joined the Strikeforce ranks.
With Fedor, Rogers, Werdum, Bigfoot, and current Strikeforce heavyweight king Alistair Overeem all waving the Strikeforce flag, the young promotion deserves high marks for compiling a wealth of legitimate talent in a less than abundant heavyweight division, and in a market dominated by the almighty UFC. Let's keep our fingers crossed for some weight to be added to this salivating rumor.
