Keith_Kizer

I've tried to adhere to being a positive MMA fan who refrains from whining and blurting out inaccuracies, but I threw a little tempertantrum about some of the controversy in MMA from last weekend, and was reminded how emotion can blind your logic and common sense by being made aware that I had published some errors within the article.

It's ironic that I'm crying about the rules not being enforced consistently or properly while I simultaneously trample over the basic etiquette of journalism in the same piece.

Despite the fact that I had not exactly showered his Nevada establishment with praise, Keith Kizer of the NSAC was kind enough to drop me a line with some important notations:

The original report stated:  “…Matt Hamill was cleared by the commission's doctor to fight Keith Jardine with a quarter-sized boil that was confirmed to be a staph infection…”  The term “boil” turns out to be an unfit term with negative connotations I wasn’t aware of.  Mr. Kizer clarifies that it was not a boil, but rather:

“It was hard, dry eschar.  The NSAC doctor examined it and cleared Hamill.  Doctors sometimes make mistakes but I know of no evidence that says she did so regarding Hamill.  I stand by her.”

The original report contained reference to an article from the Las Vegas Review-Journal with the verbiage that the NSAC doctor in the past “was once handed a cease and desist letter from public health investigators for ‘a gross breakdown in infection control practices’”. “Allegedly”, a word of almighty importance, was mistakenly amiss from that sentence. Kizer also added that Dr. Mazzorana was later completely absolved of the claims.

Finally, Kizer also shed light on my question regarding the perceived lack of consistency in Herb Dean’s point deduction when Keith Jardine unintentionally poked Matt Hamill in the eye.  I couldn’t understand the characteristics that so drastically differentiated that incident from the rest.  Keith Kizer explained:

“I spoke to Herb Dean after the bout.  He explained that Mr. Jardine was being wild with his punches (open fingers) and it resulted in actual injury to Mr. Hamill.  Because of both aspects, he used his discretion to take away a point.  I don’t see any inconsistency in that.”
