The M-1 Selection: Americas tournament finals heavyweight contest features two fighters with contrasting styles both in an out of the ring.   Team Bombsquad’s Pat Bennett and American Top Team’s Kenny Garner are set to enter the M-1 ring on September 18th and take the next big step on their way to the top.

At 6’ 3” tall and 245lbs, Team Bombsquad’s Pat Bennett is a mountain of a man.  With a strong wrestling pedigree, Bennett brings a 3-1 professional record into the finals.  Showing off excellent power Bennett made quick work in his quarterfinal matchup against Ryan Smiley, using only :37 seconds of the opening round to earn a KO victory.   Bennett’s semi final fight with talented heavyweight Mehdi Hassan was nothing short of a war in the ring.  The two fighters went toe to toe for 15 minutes with Bennett showing a will to win that carried him to a unanimous decision victory, and earning his place in the finals.

Anthony "The Big Calzone" Leone (8-1) is making his Bellator debut tonight, against Georgi Karakhanyan (13-2-1).  This is a tough fight for Leone, but he's one of those fighters who thrive on big challenges.

Leone got the call to fight in Bellator after Alvin Robinson got injured.  The Big Calzone is a Team Bombsquad fighter, so you know his training has been top notch and that he'll be ready tonight despite the short notice.

Keep on eye on this, kid.  I think he's going to open a lot of eyes tonight, while possibly closing his opponent's.  After the jump check out a HL video of Leone in action against Tateki Matsuda from last March.

Nice slugfest between Bellator champ Joe Soto and challenger Joe Warren.  Here's the full fight in HD.

Team BombSquad, which has fighters in all the major organizations, is also very well represented at the M-1 Global Selection Americas tournament.  Three BombSquad fighters, Pat Bennett, Mike Guerin and Tom "Da Tank" Gallicchio, will be fighting in the finals on September 18th at Ballys in Atlantic City.

Heavyweight Pat Bennet will be facing Kenny Garner for the HW title.  Bennett knocked out Ryan Smiley in just 37 seconds in his quarterfinals match, then beat Mehdi Hassan by unanimous decision in the semis.  Garner is a tough customer and this fight could be a slugfest.

Mike Geurin, who fights at middleweight, beat Todd Chattelle and a very tough Shane Primm to advance to the finals, where he'll be taking on  Tyson Jeffries.  Jeffries advanced after a razor thin decision against Plinio Cruz, who is a very good fighter himself, so this too will be a war.

Crowd favorite Tom "Da Tank" Gallicchio has also earned his way into the finals.  It's been a rough road for Da Tank, who a split decision against Reggie Pena, then fought a very tough Aaron Meisner.  Meisner gave Tom all he could handle until the third round, when Da Tank went into overdrive and locked on a choke to secure a submission victory. Tom will now be facing Len "The Liger" Bentley at Ballys, and this is another great match up.

As the ring announcer for these shows, I've had a great time watching all the action and expect the finals to be amazing.  For more info, check out M-1 Global's website.

After the jump, you can enjoy a video of Bennett, Geurin and Gallicchio at a roundtable meeting where they discuss the event.  See you at Ballys!

New York City, New York (August 30, 2010) – With the M-1 Selection tournament finals taking place Saturday, September 18th, 2010 at Bally’s Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey, M-1 Global is set to create an equally impressive undercard with bouts featuring tournament returnees and newcomers to the M-1 ring; Bacallao and Thorpe will faceoff to determine positioning on the M-1 Global lightweight contender ladder.

“The Finals bouts are going to show the world that M-1 Global is finding tomorrow’s superstar MMA fighters,” says Evgeni Kogan, Director of Operations for M-1Global. “The Americas Finals will be a great event as the finalists are vying for the title of being crowned the 2010 Selections Champion while the undercard fighters are jockeying for position on the contenders ladder.”

The Final round bouts feature rising American stars who are one victory away from being crowned the M-1 Selection champion in their respective weight classes.

M-1 Global's Selection Americas semi-finals are in the books and the fights were amazing.  I had a great time ring announcing and already look forward to the finals on September 18th.  The 10 finalists have fought there way to the top and now will be fighting each other to see who reigns supreme.

Team Bombsquad, out of Cortland, NY, saw three of their four semi-finalists move on to the finals.  That's pretty amazing, and it shows how well head trainer Ryan Ciotoli trains his guys.  Ryan and Gary "G-Man" Marino do a great job running Team Bombsquad and their team is present in every organization.  Always a pleasure to see the Bombsquad represented at the shows.

One of the highlights of my evening was the return of Dr. Death Touch, aka Dr. Michael Kelly.  The good doctor had been noticeably absent from the past few events, so it was great seeing him.  We had a couple of funny moments together as well.  I was sitting beside him during the fights and at one point between rounds, a fighter took a drink of water and sprayed it out of the ring, right at us.  Dr. Kelly actually had to clean off his glasses afterwards.  Then later on, he returned to his seat only to find a fan sitting in it.  That's when the good doctor transformed from the mild mannered Dr. Kelly to the evil Dr. Death Touch.  He gave the fan a look and told him to scram.  The guy, evidently seeing his life flash before his eyes, did just that, bowing and scraping as he backpedalled away to his own seat.  It was a classic NJ MMA moment, and a great way to welcome Dr. Kelly back to ringside.

After the jump you can check out the finalists and read up on how to watch all the action come September 18th.  See you at Ballys!

This past Saturday, UFC 117 was not the only MMA show going on.  Over in Atlantic City, NJ at Bally's Hotel and Casino there was an MMA show put on by some new guys.  Oh, you might have heard of them; M-1 Global.  If by now, you have not picked up my sarcasm regarding the “new guys” of MMA then stop reading this and get back to your game of Quidditch.

This was my first time attending an M-1 event and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised and the show far surpassed my expectations.  M-1 even brought Fedor Emelianenko to town for a press conference and to sign some autographs.  This went over very well amongst the MMA purists that were in attendance.  It was a fantastic session with a lot of great questions from the press and fans alike.  I had an absolute blast!  Bally’s Grand Ballroom was rocking from wall to wall with some fired up fans that were ready to see some knock down, drag out fights.  My esteemed colleague, Kahl-One will be posting the video of the press conference and a highlight reel as soon as he is done editing them.  I assure you, it will be worth the wait!

At the close of the final bout on Saturday night’s M-1 Selection Americas 2010 – Americas Semi Finals at Bally’s Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, frenzied fight fans bore witness to stellar performances as the tournament’s Finals round matchups materialized.

The Americas Final round presents a stellar card of returnees with only one victory standing between the fighter and the title of M-1 Selection Champion in their respective weight classes. “Tonight’s performances were overall astounding,” says Evgeni Kogan, M-1’s Director of Operations. “The MMA world is going to have to take notice of our next generation superstar fighters. If the Semi’s presented this high a level of excitement, the Finals are going to be that much better.”
