What's not to love about a good old fashioned "Legends" match?
We have historic great Randy Couture finally butting heads with inspirational Pride Gran Prix 2000 champion Mark Coleman at UFC 109, with Frank Trigg vs. Matt Serra on the same card, and Renzo Gracie vs. Matt Hughes on the near horizon. The next installment of The Ultimate Fighter will feature long-time UFC light-heavyweight rivals Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell as opposing coaches.
Now, FiveOuncesOfPain has featured an interview with Pat Miletich where the veteran MMA trainer and competitor reveals that he and Frank Shamrock have made a verbal agreement to fight in Strikeforce. However, in the very next breath, Miletich relays that Shamrock is not negotiating graciously and speculates he's hesitant to make things official.
Frank Shamrock and I have verbally agreed to fight each other, but from what I understand he’s being difficult in the negotiations. For whatever reason he may have, I think it’s too bad because I think it’s the type of fight that would draw a lot of attention. It would be two guys that were UFC champions and have done a lot for that organization, and now they’re involved with Strikeforce. I think it just made sense. But for whatever reason I think he’s having trouble pulling the trigger. He may be nervous about getting slapped around, but that’s the way it sits right now. Hopefully I can find someone else to fight if he doesn’t want to do it. I want to get in there before Summer.
From his last sentence, it sounds as if Miletich is ready to bypass Shamrock if he doesn't commit soon. Miletich went on to mention that a potential cause for Shamrock's delay could be the results of a past training session between the two UFC pioneers.
I think it could be. I think he knows what is most likely going to happen. We’ve rolled before so I have a sense for what he’s got. Obviously I’ve watched him fight for years and he’s a talented guy, but I don’t think he has anything to hurt me with. Maybe he knows that.
Miletich said, beyond the Shamrock fight, that his preference would be to fight at 170 pounds, where he feels he would have a good chance against the top fighters. Going out with a bang, Miletich concluded by commenting that he would even welcome a brawl with newly crowned Strikeforce welterweight champ Nick Diaz.
Nick Diaz is pretty fun to watch. He really is. He’s a creative and very talented kid. But yeah, I would definitely like to step in the cage with him. If he gives me a shot, that would be a blast. I think the crowd would love that fight too.
