In his interview with MMAweekly, Aaron Simpson says that he is looking for answers. But one of the answers Simpson ISN’T looking for is the real identity of the guy who killed his undefeated record.
Simpson fought Chris "The Crippler” Leben on June 19th, 2010, as part of the UFC’s TUF 11 Finale. After taking Chris down early in round one, the rest of the fight was very Lebenesque, with Chris absorbing blows like a Brawny dishtowel and countering with gutsy flurries of schoolyard punishment. The fight ended with about 45 seconds left in round two, after Simpson got into some trouble and appeared to stumble away from Leben’s accumulating face, face, face combinations.
So if Simpson wants answers, what is the question?
In his interview, Simpson explains that he “hit a weird wall” during the Leben fight. He wonders why. After his fight, a South Dakota doctor checked his bloodwork and discovered “a low thyroid, low iron and low . . . vitamin D and some other things.”
While Simpson’s physiological situation is a mystery, hitting a guy like Leben is very much like hitting a “weird wall,” in the sense that, well, the guy is weird. And he’s very wall-like in his ability to assimilate abuse.
Unfortunately, this wall hits back.
