Miller Mania Part Two: Jimmy Miller

Jim Miller made a dazzling debut at UFC 89, chocking out David Baron and winning the Submission of the Night award. Jim was with him brother Dan at the NJ Boxing Hall of Fame dinner, along with their manager, Mike Constantino.

I spoke to Jim and got his thoughts on the fight.

Garv: Hey, Jimmy. Nice fight at UFC 89. Tell us about it.

Miller: It was a tough fight. I went after him, you know. He was tough, I knew he was dangerous. So once I got him down I wanted to really dominate position instead of what I normally do, which is kind of play around a little bit and give up position by going for submissions and stuff like that. I made sure I really tried to secure position with him.

Garv: It looked like you dominated from the beginning. Were you surprised that things were going so well?

Miller: Not really. I train hard. I train with some of the best guys in New Jersey. I knew he was tough and I knew he was dangerous but I had a good game plan for him.

Garv: So right now the Miller brothers are 3-0 in the UFC. Are you looking to be the first set of brothers that are that simultaneous champions in the UFC?

Miller: Oh yeah, definitely. We’re both trying to climb our way to the top, you know.

More with Jim Miller after the jump.

Garv: Any idea when your next fight is?

Miller: No, not yet. Probably January or February, something like that.

Garv: Is there anyone in your division that you’d really like to fight?

Miller: There’s a couple of guys that I think would be an exciting fight. Whether or not it will be my next matchup I don’t know. I’d love to fight Guida. I’d love to fight Huerta. There are a ton of guys that I think I match up well with that would be a great fight for the fans–a great win for me or a great win for them.

Garv: How about guys like Sean Sherk and BJ Penn?

Miller: They’re both tough guys and I’d love to fight either one of them.I’d take that fight in a heartbeat, either one of them.

Garv: You’re a good wrestler but against a Sean Sherk you’d need to pull out some of the Jamie Cruz BJJ moves.

Miller: Well, definitely. I’m gonna go for the sub.

Garv: And BJ Penn is fighting GSP. What’s your take on that fight?

Miller: I don’t know how BJ’s gonna fare in this one either. The last one was a tough fight and BJ did really well. And so did GSP. He came back from that bad first round and ended up taking position from him. But BJ’s been fighting at 55 now so he’s probably lost a little bit of his bulk that he had and I think he’s going to be the smaller fighter again, and GSP is like a frieght train.

Garv: BJ did very well standing in the first round and after the Matt Serra fight it seems that GSP prefers the ground. Do you think we could see GSP trying to take Penn down early?

Miller: I think he could take BJ Penn down. It’s going to be a tough fight. They’re both extremely dangerous–really two of the top pound for pound guys on the planet and it should be a good fight.

Garv: I understand that you recently got married.

Miller: Yes I did

Garv: You’re going on your honeymoon?

Miller: Yeah, going to Aruba.

Awesome!. Thanks, Jimmy. Don’t lose all your strength on your honeymoon!
